Library Residency

The library residency is an experimental site for durational research-based practice. The library invites artists, collectives, and writers to take over the space for a range of five to six months so as to allow them proper time to develop their work and research. The library residency provides us with the opportunity to ground the work we do helping us become evermore welcoming, accessi- ble, and permeable to our diverse audiences.

Because this is a space to further research-based practices, residents are selected on the basis of their research project, their connections to NYC, and the ways in which resources provided by Canal Projects can amplify their work. For the residency we offer access to Canal Project’s facilities, equipment, and a stipend, all of which should be put at the service of the artist’s collaborative practices.

Canal Projects Library Residency supports a wide range of artistic experimentation encouraging residents to freely take over the space, activating on a regular basis the library, lower-level gallery, and food pantry. Projects developed during the residency can include ,but are not limited to, sound or listening events, radio broadcasting, publications, reading groups, film screenings, cook outs, talks, performances, and more.
